#4: Blue rinse please!

I was thinking the other day that there is a distinct difference between the hairstyles of the young and the old. Ranging from long flowing locks of young girls, to the permed blue rinse worn by the older lady. This made me wonder, is there an age or a time in your life when you decide to call it a day and chop off all your lovely long hair in favor of an old lady hairstyle?

I think it's probably a day when you wake up in a really bad mood, look at yourself in the mirror and think "oh God I'm old!! I'm going to do something drastic.....Ring ring....Hello Nicky Clarke!? Cancel everything, prepare the bluest rinse you have, I'm ready for my old lady haircut!"  This is surely a turning point in your life.  Up until this point you may have been gripping on to your youth by your fingernails, pretending not to hear phrases like "mutton dressed as lamb", but having accepted the perm it means you have come to terms with the fact that you are getting on a bit, and maybe need to accept an elasticated waistband into your life.  Having said this I am not suggesting that you go from long flowing locks straight to blue rinsed perm unless you are feeling particularly senile.  The rinse and perm are the final steps of the process, reserved for the "elderly beyond repair, allowed to fart in public, hearing aid wearing, mobility scooter" kind of old.

The bit that I don't understand is the part where you chose to chop it all off- the middle aged hair.  I remember quite clearly the day my mum decided to get rid of her long hair in favor of a hideous bowl cut.  It was in the kitchen of our old house where we used to have a lady come round to cut our hair.  I remember going into the kitchen and my mums hair was all over the floor and she was left with "I'm too old for long hair" hair, it was scarring.

What with all the modern technology knocking about at the moment will older people of the future, i.e. me in 40 years, be able to easily have the same hair they have now?! Bit of dye and some clip in extensions says yes!  It will be such a confusing time if you see someone who looks 20 from behind but 80 from the front rolling about on a mobility scooter.  I can just imagine my Grandma rocking a hairstyle like mine, she'd look like Donatella Versace only with slightly less leathery skin and not hideous like a sea monster.  So on second thought, maybe it should be law that old people have old people hair so as not to confuse me, I'm just not looking forward to mine!

Over and out,

  1. I think about this often! I see very few older woman who suit long locks - for instance there was this one woman in Paphos who had it and she really reminded me of Jacob's dad Twilight - not a great look for a woman.

I think we can still keep it stylish though, and there's no doubt I'll always dye my hair - I'll never know if my time to be grey ever came because L'oreal will always be in my life!

What short look would you go for then, Lucy?

  2. I think I'm going to desperately cling on to my youth by opting for a spikey/messy look, with massive overuse of products, causing a huge amount of global warming. So not only will my hair be coiffed to a suitable style for my age, I might be able to get a tan in England. Result.

  3. Hi, Total Stranger chiming in here. Very amusing blog entry. I'm 51 and still have long hair - naturally brunett streaked with gray. I'm looking for blue hair rinse because I want to see if I can dye the grey blue and leave the dark hair dark. Actually, I'd love to find the violet. Yeah, I used to dye my hair purple in the 80s but I'm not ready to go for having to dye it forever because there is no "dye it back to my natural color" once you've got so much grey. Wonder what that rinse is called?

  6. Hi Fidget

just find a more mature salon and ask for a blue rinse its as simple as that and you will find you get a much better style, than some of these so called up market salons and cheaper
    go for it girl
